Suzanne Matunis

Suzanne Marie Hoban Matunis peacefully passed away at home on April 8, 2026. Born October 11, 1933 in Wilkes Barre, PA, she was the eldest daughter of Frank Henry Hoban and Catherine Louise Gabel Hoban. She dearly loved her siblings, Frank Xavier Hoban and Mary Catherine DeNero. Suzanne attended St. Paul’s Catholic High School in Scranton, PA and, in 1955, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at Chestnut Hill College. She worked as a social worker at St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia where she was introduced by her boss, Catherine McCarey, to her future husband, Dr. Joseph Matunis. On their first date, Joe shared that he hoped to someday live on a farm with his wife and 13 children. Suzanne did not run away. In 1957, Suzanne and Joe were married. After a stint with the Public Health Service in Kotzebue, Alaska, they did, indeed, settle on a farm in Loysville, Pennsylvania and raised 13 children. Suzanne is preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, Joe; son, Michael; and grandson-in-law, Drew Banker. She was most proud of her 13 children: Frank (Ruth), Mary Jo (Bob Houston), Suzanne (David Pustinger), Joe (Jackie Chang), Ellen (Mike Silverstone), Kate (Tom Wolfe), Mike (Erika), Megan (Jim Schaper), John (Trisha), Becky (Andy Schriber), David (Jennifer), Mary Beth (Mark Ventura), and Emily (Kim). She adored her grandchildren: Matthew, Stephen, Becky (Dan Flynn), Robert (Alyssa Smydo), Abigail (Drew Banker), Ryan, Joey (Carolyn Hapsias), Allison, Claire (Shane Quinlan), Maggie, Myles, Nathan (Pam Anderson), Jonathan (Hannah Kennedy), Tausey (Trisha Cheever), Annaka, Milo, Max (Ginger Burke), Katie (Bryan Nguyen), Emma, Alek (Jenny Cornell), Aidan (Hannah Gizenski), Adam, Max, Olivia, Jillian, Noah, Madeline, Logan, and Jason, and great-granddaughters, Rory and Elizabeth. She also deeply loved her adopted daughter, Roslyn (Rob Werner), and their family. Suzanne was a lifelong Girl Scout, spending many happy summers as a camper and counselor at Camp Archbald. Her strong faith and convictions inspired her community activism including work with the Legislative Initiative Against the Death Penalty and the Helen Stephens Mental Health Association. Her Catholic faith guided her and was evident in all that she did. She was a committed member of Saint Bernard Catholic Church and loved the friendships that were forged there. Suzanne was known for her pies baked with fruit from the farm. She loved awarding laurel wreaths for the family Farmcation events. Her house was always beautifully decorated for each holiday. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed her book club friends. She loved to travel. She loved to tell stories. And, she loved any opportunity to get together with her “noisy but nice” family. Visitation with the family will be at the Boyer Family Funeral Home, New Bloomfield, on Thursday, April 16 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and at St. Bernard Catholic Church, New Bloomfield, on Friday, April 17 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Following the Friday visitation, a funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Sharman officiating. Lunch to follow in the church social hall. Memorial donations can be made to St. Bernard Catholic Church, New Bloomfield , PA or to the Joseph & Suzanne Matunis Memorial Scholarship (West Perry High School).
