Paul Oakley Styer

Paul Oakley Styer, 95, of Shermans Dale, PA, formerly of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed peacefully on July 3, 2021. He was born on March 12, 1926 in Danville, PA and was the son of Charles and Emily (Crossley) Styer. Paul graduated from Cumberland Valley High School. He worked most of his life as a mechanic and specialized on cars and farm and heavy equipment. He always enjoyed finding ways to fix things. Paul was employed at Kuhns-Harnish Ford in Mechanicsburg, PA and was then employed at Book of the Month Club where he retired in 1991. Paul was a member of Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church in Shermans Dale where he was an active member of the adult Sunday School class, Wednesday Small Group, and the Service Recording and Visitation Ministry. He was formerly a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and Youth leader at the Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsburg. He also served as a Boy Scout Leader. Paul enjoyed dancing with the Paxton Promenaders; was a member of the Capital City Callers Association; The Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society; and a former member of the Capital City Polka Association. He enjoyed spending time with family, attending reunions with both Styer and Gingrich families, and gardening to watch all plants bloom and grow. He was also a member of the Marysville Golden Age and the Shermans Dale Seniors. Paul spent time touring the United States to see covered bridges and walked on the Appalachian Trail in all fourteen states. He enjoyed traveling throughout the US including both Alaska and Hawaii. Paul is survived by his wife of 25 years, Naomi Gingrich Boyer Styer; a son David and his wife Naomi of Hagerstown, MD; a daughter Joyce Hopkins and her husband James of Bonney Lake, WA; stepdaughter Cheryl Markle of Shermans Dale, PA; and stepdaughter Cerise Sawyer and her husband Frank of Shermans Dale, PA. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Elizabeth Styer, Deanna Hoffman, Bill Markle, Jared Sawyer, Sean Sawyer, and their families. Paul is survived by his sisters Rachel Swartz and Hilda Kashner and his brothers Fred Styer and John Styer. Paul was preceded in death by Pearl Shields Styer, his wife of 43 years and an infant daughter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Ralph, Leonard, Allen, Wilbur, Lloyd, Howard, and Bruce. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 10 AM at Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, 935 Windy Hill Road, Shermans Dale, PA. A memorial service will follow at 11 AM.
